When I was a kid, we used to grow variety vegetable at our backyard. Okra or lady finger is one of the main vegetable we grew and it quickly became our favourite vegetable.
What is okra?
If you are not familiar with Okra (ladyfinger), this is how okra (lady’s fingers – ladies finger) looks like.
In Malaysia, we normally called it Lady Finger or in Malay Bendi. But, in other country it might have different name like bhendi, bhindi, bamia, ochro or gumbo. Anyway, it refers to the same thing.
How to prepare Okra?
Okra is not complicated to prepare. Normally, I will sliced it thinly and soak it in a water for about 1 hour to reduce the sliminess. Yes, Okra tend to be slimed and not everyone like it.
What does okra taste like?
Okra do not have distinguished flavour but it can be too slimy if you did not soak in water. Some people describe okra texture as silky, mushy and slimy. However, Okra do have delicate flavor and a nutty/seedy texture. The most important, it really depending on the way you cook it and you want to buy a fresh okra. Not old, because it can be chewy.
Benefits of Okra (Lady Finger)
Okra are among the very low calorie vegetable and containing no saturated fats or cholesterol. Its high in dietary fiber, minerals, vitamin A, flavonoid anti-oxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-complex and vitamin K.
How to cook okra?
